Practice.

Updated: Nov 9

Did you know? Music stimulates the brain, the senses, and the body.

Playing an instrument is even better - it's cathartic!

Let's figure out how to keep this going.

I'm guessing you started learning an instrument because you liked the sound of the instrument, you know someone who plays the instrument, or you listened to a professional musician and wanted to follow in the same path.

I've been a fan of Billy Joel and his music since the 70s, and I still find it inspiring!

How do you stay inspired?

Tip #1 - Space

It is important to make your practice space enticing. Create a space that is inviting, a place where you want to spend time.

I recommend setting up your instrument in your space and keep it set up. Set your keyboard, guitar, cello, flute, etc. on a stand. Do not put the instrument in its case... until you need to bring it somewhere. Once you get home again, put your instrument back on that stand, in its place, ready to use. This is so important - you must see your instrument, that is the first step in engaging you to practice.

Also, have a music stand for sheet music with the music on it, ready to rehearse.

Decorate your space:

  1. Hang up an encouraging thought.

  2. Have a stuffy (stuffed animal) join you. They are the best little listeners.

  3. A rug, a favorite wall color, posters, drink cup, coffee mug, stickers, etc...

  4. Other ideas: a mirror to check your posture, a lamp for extra lighting, a notebook/pencil,, a voice recorder, and a refreshing drink to keep you hydrated.

Tip #2 - Steps

Do not practice the whole piece in one sitting. Take small steps. Play 4 - 8 measures at a time, focusing on the fingering and rhythm, then repeat.

Don't worry, after the small steps, you will put the whole thing together and play like a super star.

"Even the smallest actions are steps in the right direction."

Tip #3 - Satisfaction

  1. Who are your role models in music? Who are the musicians you listen to? Do you want to play like them or play their music?

  2. Do you want to play because music is in your family and you want to carry on the talent?

  3. Do you want to play with a goal in mind of joining a band someday?

  4. Do you want to play because its a great hobby to fill your time and it just feels good to make music?

Tip #4 - Shine

After all your efforts - The happy part of practice is when the song is completely learned.

Time to shout it out, share it, bring joy to others, rake in the applause, or simply play it for yourself because it feels good and makes you happy. :)

"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out."

(Robert Collier)
